✦ ABOUT FELLOWSHIPS

Artist fellowships, answered.

A fellowship is sustained support for an artist rather than a single project: typically a substantial award, often paired with a residency period, mentorship, studio access, or an institutional affiliation, running from several months to multiple years.

This page tracks fellowship opportunities currently open to applications. Each listing is verified by hand, states the award, duration, eligibility, and deadline, and links directly to the sponsoring institution's official application page.

What is the difference between a fellowship and a grant?
A grant usually funds a specific project with a defined outcome. A fellowship invests in the artist: the funding is typically larger, runs longer, and often includes non-monetary support like mentorship, studio space, or an institutional home. Many fellowships also carry significant prestige.
How long does a fellowship last?
Most run between six months and two years, though shorter intensive fellowships and multi-year appointments both exist. The duration and expectations, such as being in residence or teaching, are stated in each listing and in the official guidelines it links to.
Are fellowships open to international artists?
Eligibility varies widely. University and foundation fellowships are often open internationally, sometimes with visa sponsorship; government-funded fellowships are usually restricted by citizenship or residency. Arthead verifies and marks the eligibility on every listing.
How competitive are artist fellowships?
Highly competitive, since awards are large and cohorts are small. Strong applications show a consistent body of work and a clear sense of what the fellowship period would make possible. Past fellow lists, linked from most official pages, show what each program looks for.
