About this call
The Chevening British Library Southeast Asian Fellowship, co-funded by the British Library and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, is a 12-month fellowship at the British Library from September 2027 to September 2028. The fellow will research the Library's collection of early printed works in Cambodian, Lao and Thai languages from c.1840 to 1950 (c.600 to 800 items), providing metadata in original scripts and Romanisation as the basis for catalogue records, working with the Henry Ginsburg Curator, Ms Jana Igunma, and colleagues in the Southeast Asia section and the Conservation Centre. Fellows will also write a blog post and/or journal article, organise a show-and-tell session or staff presentation, take part in public engagement activities and present findings at a national or international symposium or conference.

- Open to mid-career professionals who are citizens of and resident in Cambodia, Laos or Thailand and who also meet Chevening's standard eligibility criteria. Applicants need a postgraduate qualification (or equivalent professional training or experience), at least five years of professional and/or academic research experience, current employment or enrolment as a PhD candidate (not with a UK/EU or USA university), excellent Thai, Lao and Khmer or excellent Thai with either Lao or Khmer, and good written and spoken English.
