✦ ABOUT ARTIST RESIDENCIES

Artist residencies, answered.

An artist residency gives you dedicated time and space to work: a studio, often housing, sometimes a stipend, in a setting away from your usual routine. Programs run from a couple of weeks to a full year, hosted by institutions ranging from rural retreats to major museums.

This page tracks residency open calls that are currently accepting applications. Every listing is checked by hand before it goes live, shows the deadline, application fee, eligibility, and what the program provides, and links directly to the host institution's own application page.

Are artist residencies free?
It varies. Fully funded residencies cover housing and studio space and may add a stipend or materials budget; others charge program or application fees. Arthead labels each listing with its fee status, so you can filter for free-to-apply programs before reading further.
Can international artists apply to these residencies?
Many residency programs accept international applicants, and Arthead notes the eligibility of every listing. Some programs are limited to citizens or residents of the host country; those restrictions are stated on the listing so you don't waste an application.
What does a residency typically provide?
At minimum, studio or work space for a defined period. Beyond that, programs differ: housing, meals, monthly stipends, materials budgets, mentorship, open studios, and a final exhibition are all common. Each Arthead listing summarizes what the specific program includes.
How do I apply for an artist residency?
You apply directly to the host institution. Arthead is a discovery and tracking tool, not an application portal: every listing links straight to the official application page. Most residencies ask for a portfolio, a project proposal, a CV, and sometimes references.
