About this call

The Image Centre in Toronto offers the Howard Tanenbaum Fellowship for artists conducting artistic research in its photography collections, including the Black Star Collection of photo-reportage. Applicants submit a 1,000-word project proposal, a CV, a portfolio or moving-image sample, and one letter of recommendation by email. The fellow carries out on-site research in Toronto for one to four weeks between 15 February and 15 December 2027. It is one of six IMC research fellowships offered for 2027.

  • Open to Canadian and international applicants. Candidates may hold any level of education, and may be independent artists with relevant experience and demonstrated interests. Research must draw on the collections of The Image Centre and/or Toronto Metropolitan University Archives and Special Collections, and must be carried out on site in Toronto for one to four weeks between 15 February and 15 December 2027. Past winners of IMC fellowships may not reapply for five years. Applicants may apply to one fellowship only.
