About this call
Mancos Common Press, a community letterpress facility in the original Mancos Times newspaper building in downtown Mancos, Colorado, United States, is accepting applications for its 10-day artist residencies in 2027 (April to December). Residents have independent access to the historic press and the new Commons studio, with platen and flatbed cylinder proof presses, metal and wood type, etching presses and a screen printing darkroom. Artists are encouraged, but not required, to examine environmental and social issues. Residents are asked to share their work through an open house, an artist's talk or a class.
Who can apply
- Open to applicants of any nationality
- Medium: Printmaking
- Entry fee: $20
- Residencies last 10 days between April and December 2027. Applicants who want to work with letterpress must have prior letterpress printing knowledge and be able to work independently with the presses, type and equipment; the etching presses can be reserved. The Press gives an orientation, but all artists must be able to work independently toward their stated goals. Residents pay for all transportation (a travel stipend may be offered, funds permitting), all food, paper (the Press has some for purchase) and other project materials, and specialty ink for the etching presses; materials are scarce locally, so bring them or send them ahead. Residents are asked to hold an open house, artist's talk or class, and to donate 3 prints to the press. Apply with the online form: a project proposal (500 character limit), a statement about yourself and your creative expression (500 character limit), your letterpress experience (training, professional experience and the equipment you are proficient with), the dates you are interested in, and 3 to 5 recent images (jpg, jpeg, png or pdf, files up to 5 MB), plus a $20 application fee.
