About this call

Sixi Museum, a non-profit art institution in Nanjing that combines collection, exhibition, academic research and public education, is accepting applications for the 2027 Spring and Autumn sessions of the Sixi International Artist-in-Residence Project. Each session runs three months, Spring from March to May 2027 and Autumn from September to November 2027, with exact dates set according to the selected artists' preferences. Applications should respond to one of two themes: Flux and Imprints, which looks at cross-regional mobility, cultural reconstruction and memory, including the family histories of overseas Chinese and the legacy of colonialism in Asia; and Folds of Text, which treats text as a fluid medium across literature, linguistics, music and sound, and the visual arts. The project runs on a non-profit basis and covers visa costs, round-trip flights, insurance, accommodation in a private apartment or loft studio, personnel and technical assistance, and a material allowance. Artists from all disciplines are welcome, applicants must be at least 18 and there are no restrictions on nationality, though sufficient Mandarin or English is required for research and communication. Residents take part in an artist talk, a workshop and an open studio, are expected to produce a presentable outcome, and are expected to donate a selection of the works made during the residency to Sixi Museum. Applications close 15 November 2026 Beijing time, with final responses by mid-February 2027.
