About this call

A4 Art Museum runs a multidisciplinary international residency in Chengdu, China, hosting artists, curators, designers and cross-disciplinary creatives. Since 2011 it has worked with 335 creators from more than 44 countries. Residents are paired with local residents through the museum's Super Agent system, which is designed to give quick access to everyday life in the district and to local resources. The programme runs on roughly eight week cycles and expects each resident to initiate one or two small participatory public events, alongside open studio days, field trips and group sharing sessions. Outcomes may take the form of temporary or permanent public artworks, project presentations, large public events or published research. Two tracks are offered: a fully funded fellowship and a self-funded Light Version.

Who can apply

  • International applicants
  • Medium: Mixed Media / Installation / Performance / Video / New Media
  • Entry fee: See official site
  • Applications are sent by email with a CV, portfolio, personal photo and a project application form, all in both Chinese and English. The fellowship track and the Light Version track use different addresses: a4residency@a4am.cn for the international residency, qiaojiayi@a4residency.com.cn for the Light Version. The email subject must name the track, the applicant and the chosen session. Note that the Light Version is self funded: the artist covers airfare or rail and all production costs. Residency sessions on offer are July to October 2027, April to June 2028 and July to October 2028, each around eight weeks. The 30 June 2026 deadline for the autumn 2027 intake has passed; the open deadline is 31 December 2026 for the 2028 sessions. Selection weighs originality, capacity to collaborate with the local community and commercial partners, feasibility, and social and cultural impact.
