Micro-grants (Arts Across Canada and Abroad)

Micro-grants sits inside Arts Across Canada and Abroad, the program introduced in 2025 that combines the former Arts Across Canada and Arts Abroad programs. The Council describes Micro-grants as funding for activities that support the professional growth and advancement of artistic careers or practices of artists, arts workers, groups and organizations. It absorbs activities previously funded by four separate streams: Explore and Create Professional Development for Artists, Supporting Artistic Practice Professional Development for Arts Professionals, Arts Across Canada Travel and Arts Abroad Travel. The Council's glossary defines a micro grant as a grant that normally has one payment and is for one-time small-scale activities, noting such project grants may have activities spanning more than one year. Micro-grants is also the route for applicants who need to meet personal access needs tied to an activity the Council is not otherwise funding, such as an art fair, a conference or a workshop. There is no fixed deadline, and the Council says results usually arrive within 4 months of submitting an application.

- Apply at any time before the start date of your project, activity or departure date. Applications are managed in the Canada Council client portal and require a validated applicant profile. The Council states that applicants must meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the profile, which for individuals and groups typically includes past training, past compensation for arts activities and recognition by other artists or arts workers. Activities proposed by someone younger than 18 and activities that fulfil course requirements at an educational institution are not eligible.
