About this call

Bread & Salt, an arts space at 1955 Julian Avenue in the Logan Heights neighborhood south of downtown San Diego, awards three-month residencies to local, national and international artists each year. Residencies include studio and gallery space, with 24-hour studio access and public engagement during gallery hours and extended event hours every second Saturday from 5pm to 8pm. Artists at all career stages and in all media are eligible, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, writing, dance, music, interdisciplinary work, social practice and architecture. A jury of artists and arts professionals selects finalists based on the merit of past work, readiness to engage with the residency, potential to impact the community at Bread & Salt and commitment to the studio. Bread & Salt makes the offer based on available time slots.

  • Open to local, national and international artists at all career stages. Artists may not be enrolled in an academic program at the time the residency would take place; PhD students are considered case by case. There is no apartment component: artists make their own lodging arrangements. All applications and work samples must be in, or translated to, English. Apply with a resume or CV, a letter of interest (why you want to work at Bread & Salt and how the residency will affect your practice), the names and emails of three references and documentation of recent work (visual work up to 12 images; film, video or new media up to 30 minutes; music or sound up to 30 minutes), submitted as working links through the online form; broken links disqualify the application. Artist collectives submit one application per group, stating the number of individuals on the form.
