Ghost in the Classical Body: Group Exhibition Open Call, Round II

About this call
Culturally Arts Collective invites submissions for Ghost in the Classical Body, a virtual group exhibition about how the conventions of the classical figure persist in contemporary image-making. The curators trace the classical body from Greek workshops and Roman copyists through the Renaissance studio and the nineteenth-century academy, alongside the Byzantine and Slavic icon tradition, and ask where those older conventions survive inside new technology: the contrapposto in a motion-capture pose, the Madonna's tilt of the head in a selfie, the plaster smoothness of a rendered skin. They are looking for artists whose work shows a real working relationship with that inheritance, whether from academy or atelier training, a visual tradition absorbed in childhood, or moving between cities and cultures. Hand-made and digitally born works will be hung side by side. All mediums are welcome, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, installation and 3D scanning; the figure should be present, though it may be fragmented, abstracted, veiled or only implied. The curatorial team is Olga Abramova and Andrea Maiello. Selected artists get a social media campaign highlighting each artist, and purchase inquiries are directed to the artist with no commission split.
