About this call

Mount Allison University invites Mi'kmaq basket makers and Mi'kmaq-led artistic teams to submit Expressions of Interest for a permanent public artwork celebrating the basketry traditions of Mi'kma'ki, to be installed in the R.P. Bell Library Centre for Innovation and Learning in Sackville, New Brunswick. The commission is an indoor suspended installation for a high-traffic public environment, demonstrating Mi'kmaq basketry traditions, materials or contemporary interpretations, built from durable materials with a minimum design life of 30 years. Artwork proposals are not required at this stage; the successful proponent develops the final design collaboratively with the university. The concept was proposed by an Indigenous Talking Circle of Elders, First Nation community representatives, Indigenous students, faculty and design professionals, guided by the Indigenous architectural firm Two Row Architect. A reference rendering shows illuminated baskets, but lighting is not required. Concept development runs from October 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027, with fabrication anticipated in 2029 and completion in 2030.
