About this call

Freelands Foundation, in partnership with the Borlase Smart John Wells Trust, offers three pairs of visual artists a shared month-long residency at the historic Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, Cornwall. Artists from Devon or Cornwall apply together with another UK-based artist they do not already work with. Each pair shares Studio 5 and an apartment in St Ives, has travel to and from St Ives covered, and each artist receives a £2,000 stipend for living costs. The residency is process-led, with no expectation of final works; residents are encouraged to document their time. Residencies run in March, May and September 2027, with dates agreed with the selected pairs. Shortlisted pairs are interviewed online in December 2026 and notified by January 2027.

Who can apply

  • United Kingdom only
  • Medium: Mixed Media
  • Entry fee: See official site
  • Joint applications from two artists, both based in the UK with a studio-based visual arts practice; one must be based in Devon or Cornwall (both can be). Each needs at least 5 years of professional practice (five years after graduating from a BA, or equivalent experience); no formal qualification is required and there is no upper age limit. Artists in an existing creative, professional or personal partnership, including collectives and duos, cannot apply together. Artists currently enrolled in formal education (BA, MA, PhD) are not eligible, but you may apply if your student status lapses before the residency. Employees, trustees or funders of BSJWT or Freelands Foundation are not eligible; current or previous BSJWT studio holders and residents are. Both artists must be available for at least one of March, May or September 2027 (expected 1 to 29 of the month, four weeks). Email the application form to programme@freelandsfoundation.co.uk: four questions (200, 300, 300 and 200 words, or 2, 5, 5 and 2 minute recordings), an artist statement for each artist (300 words or a 3 minute recording), and optionally a weblink and up to 5 images per artist; total document size no more than 10MB. An Access Form is optional. Shortlisted pairs are interviewed online in December 2026. The stipend is paid at the start of the residency; no additional fees cover childcare.
