About this call
Mattress Factory, the Pittsburgh museum of installation art, is launching a new studio residency for two Pittsburgh area artists in 2027. The residencies are self-led, non-prescriptive and process based, meant for artists to research and develop work, engage with the community and build their networks. Each resident gets a 6 month rent-free working studio in the museum's 1414 Monterey Street building, a $1,000 materials stipend, studio visits with staff and external guests, invitations to events and special programs, and a Mattress Factory membership. There is no exhibition component and no housing. Residency 1 runs January to June 2027, Residency 2 July to December 2027. Applicants are notified on December 4, 2026.

- For local Pittsburgh area artists who already have housing and can make regular use of a working studio at 1414 Monterey Street. Students enrolled at the time of the residency are not eligible. Apply through the online form with 10 work samples in a single PDF (25 MB maximum), a statement of up to 200 words on how you would use this opportunity to grow your practice, and which residency periods you are available for (January to June or July to December 2027). The studio is reachable only by stairs. The museum can support basic tool requests; essential tool needs should be raised in advance.
