About this call

Through the Creative Visionary Grant, the Black Artists + Designers Guild (BADG) gives two USD 5,000 awards to advanced Black makers in craft with 10 to 25 years of active studio practice, with special attention to the decolonization of the field and work that affirms Black Diasporic culture. The grant, funded by the Maxwell Hanrahan Foundation, supports all phases of a craft-based project, from research to fabrication to presentation: new work, completing an existing body of work, or a permanent public art installation. A jury of three craft professionals from across the United States selects the recipients on artistic excellence and the feasibility of the project. The award is paid in two USD 2,500 payments by ACH to a US bank account, the second after a progress report, and recipients submit a one-page progress report by March 1, 2027. Recipients are announced on or before December 15, 2026.

Who can apply

  • Open to applicants of any nationality
  • Medium: Ceramics / Textile / Sculpture
  • Entry fee: See official site
  • Open to Black-identifying craftspeople with a creative practice of 10 to 25 years, in any craft discipline: fiber arts, ceramics, furniture and woodworking, metalworking and jewelry, glass, paper and book arts, textiles and wearable arts. Architecture, industrial design and fashion design are not included. US citizenship is not required, but applicants must have a US-based bank account and be able to receive taxable income in the U.S. and report the grant as income. Projects must be based in craft traditions and celebrate Black diasporic expression; the grant is not for business operations. Previous BADG grant recipients are not eligible. The application asks you to select the discipline you work in most; work samples may come from other disciplines as long as all of it falls within craft. Composite images are not accepted. Recipients receive the second payment after submitting a progress report, and must submit a one-page progress report with images (if appropriate) by March 1, 2027.
