About this call

A Smith Gallery, a photographic arts gallery in Johnson City, Texas, invites photographers to submit work for animalia, a juried online exhibition on fauna: beasts, birds, mammals, wildlife, amphibians, reptiles, fish, insects and other creatures. Juror Traer Scott, an award-winning photographer and bestselling author of fifteen books, will select up to 47 images in total. Each selected image is featured on Facebook and Instagram during the exhibition, discussed by the gallery directors in a GalleryTalk posted on the gallery blog, listed for sale in the gallery's online store and included in an exhibition catalogue; 27 of the selected images are chosen for The 27, a hardbound fine art book of the exhibition. The online exhibition runs November 27, 2026 to January 7, 2027 and is permanently archived afterwards.

Who can apply

  • Open to applicants of any nationality
  • Medium: Photography
  • Entry fee: $40
  • Open to professional and amateur photographers working in all photographic mediums and styles; international entries are welcome. Work previously exhibited in an A Smith Gallery competition is not eligible. At present the gallery prefers not to accept images created with Artificial Intelligence. Entry fee: $40 for the first 5 images, $5 for each additional image; no limit on the number of images; fees are not refundable. Pay by PayPal with the online application, or submit the online application and mail the printed confirmation email with a check payable to A Smith Gallery, P O Box 175, Johnson City, TX 78636. Images: 1800 pixels on the longest side, JPEG at 72 ppi, named with consecutive numbers followed by your name (1FirstName_LastName.jpg) matching the numbers on the application form; no watermarks. Photographers who submit 13 or more images get a complimentary 30-minute review by the gallery directors; with fewer than 13 images a review costs an additional $20. Results emailed November 13, 2026. Jurying is blind. The gallery keeps 30% of the sales price of prints sold through its online store; when a print sells, the artist either ships a signed print directly to the buyer or the gallery prints the image for the artist. Photographers retain full rights to their images; the gallery uses them for publicity and in the online gallery, online store, exhibition catalogue and The 27 book.
