About this call

The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montréal, Canada, with the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art (PMC) in London, offers one 2027 Photography Research Fellowship on the theme of imperial exposure. The fellow works with the CCA's photography collection of roughly 65,000 photographs, more than half taken before 1900, during a one to two month residency between 7 June and 30 July 2027, with a start date in the second or third week of June. The fellow takes part in a workshop co-organized by the CCA and the PMC with a public research roundtable, gives a public presentation of work in progress, may later give a public talk at the PMC in London, and may submit an article or propose a feature to British Art Studies. Fellows receive a monthly stipend of CAD 5,000, which covers living and accommodation costs, and the CCA pays one round-trip economy flight to Montréal and reimburses shipping of scholarly materials and personal items within a set budget. Proposals that centre photography as the central question should apply to this program; other proposals on visual media go to the CCA Research Fellowship Program. Results are communicated in December 2026.

Who can apply

  • Medium: Photography / Curatorial
  • Entry fee: See official site
  • For researchers at the postdoctoral level and beyond, or with equivalent work experience. One fellowship is available. Apply online through the CCA application portal, in English or French: a research proposal of about 750 to 1,000 words on how the project relates to imperial exposure and the CCA Collection, with a title, the state of research, how it relates to the CCA and a paragraph on the expected output; an abstract of about 250 words; a project schedule of about 300 words for one or two months; a CV; a short biography of 80 to 100 words; one representative sample of written work or of a project (design, curatorial); the names of two potential referees (letters are requested only from shortlisted applicants); and the research outputs you intend to accomplish. The form also asks you to list other fellowship or grant applications submitted for the same period. Files must be PDF, maximum 5 MB each (1 MB for the biography), with your name in the file title. Documents mailed or sent by email are not accepted. Fellows start in the second or third week of June 2027 (alternative arrival dates may be proposed if professional calendars conflict), are in residence at the CCA for full-time research, present their research at a public event, and submit a brief written report at the end. Accommodation is paid from the stipend, which may be subject to withholding tax. Non-Canadian citizens are responsible for obtaining any visa or work permit, with CCA assistance. Fellows should be covered by medical insurance while in Montréal, which the CCA does not pay for. Fellows get a private office and should bring their own laptop. The fellowship is not renewable or transferable.
