Call for Sculpture: Snappy at Phinizy Nature Park

The Greater Augusta Arts Council, acting on behalf of the Phinizy Center for Water Sciences and Nature Park, is commissioning a sculpture titled Snappy for the Beaver Trail in Augusta, Georgia. The work should depict a Common Snapping Turtle and read as both a destination and an educational landmark for a park built around watershed research and conservation in the Savannah River Basin. It will be the sixth permanent piece on the park's growing sculpture trail, and funding comes from the Georgia Rehabilitation Institute. Requirements include a size of roughly 8 to 10 feet long by 6 to 8 feet wide, durable weather-resistant materials such as steel, bronze, stone or concrete, safe pedestrian interaction without climbing hazards, and a design life of at least 20 years. The commission pays $9,500 in three instalments and covers everything from design and engineering to transportation, insurance, site preparation and installation, which must be carted in because vehicles cannot use the trail. Proposals are open to professional sculptors and artist teams aged 18 or over who reside in the Southeastern United States, and each artist may submit up to five separate proposals with one concept each. Submissions close on September 25, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET, the selected artist is notified on October 19, 2026, and installation is due by February 28, 2027.
