Ars Biologica ArtXScience Residency
About this call
České Budějovice, European Capital of Culture 2028, and Ars Electronica invite artists, designers, creatives and artist collectives to apply for two fully funded residency positions working directly with local scientists. The science partner is the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, with two research directions: soil microbiology at the Institute of Soil Biology and Biogeochemistry, and freshwater microbial ecology at the Institute of Hydrobiology. The residency asks for a spatial artwork that goes beyond screen based explorations, together with public engagement formats connecting the work to the local community. The programme runs from January 2027 to April 2028 and culminates in a public presentation at the Ars Biologica Festival in spring 2028.

- Applicants must be 18 years old or older and can be of all nationalities, but must be eligible to work and travel in the EU. They must have more than 5 years of professional creative practice and enough documented work for their portfolio to be assessed, plus prior experience in interdisciplinary collaborations, ArtXScience productions and community engagement. The proposal must cover a spatial ArtXScience artwork that goes beyond screen based explorations and public engagement formats involving the local community. Selected artists commit to a first stay of up to one month in February or March 2027, an optional second stay of up to one month in August or September 2027, and a third stay of up to one month in March 2028 for the festival. They must also engage in remote and on site exchange with the scientists, share updates on social media and provide images of the residency process. Applications are submitted in English through the online platform by 28 September 2026.
