SurfRes 2026: Annual Residency and Exhibition Project
About this call
Surface Gallery in Nottingham has reopened applications for SurfRes, its annual residency and exhibition project, in a refreshed edition for 2026. Eight artists are selected to spend four weeks producing a new body of work in the gallery's open plan Project Space, which is set up so residents interact and develop their practice alongside one another. There is in house critical feedback plus formal critique sessions with established artists and curators, and shortlisted candidates are interviewed before final selection. The residency runs from October 5 to November 2, and culminates in a two week exhibition in the Main Gallery opening on November 6. Residents work with the gallery's Project Team and are encouraged to take part in flyer design, copywriting and event management, then jointly curate the final show. There is no application fee and the residency and exhibition are free to the selected artists, though no bursary or materials budget is offered. The call is open to practitioners of all disciplines who self identify as early or mid career, and current students are not eligible.
