About this call

Kakilang, a London based arts organisation, is running an open call for its zero material programme and will select one artist to develop a new body of work for public presentation in spring 2027. The programme looks for a practice that engages with materials, systems or processes, is curious about working with what already exists, and is interested in how diasporic experience shapes the way things are made. Its manifesto proposes unorthodox approaches such as hacking, smuggling and piggybacking as artistic practice, and the resulting work may take the form of a gesture, a situation, an infrastructure, a digital trace, a collective action or even an administrative process. The selected artist receives an artist fee of £2,500 and a production budget of £800, a supported public presentation, development support including tailored workshops, one to one mentoring and institutional visits, and a hot desking space at Kakilang's central London office up to three days a week between August 2026 and June 2027. Applicants must be UK based artists of ESEA heritage with at least two years of conceptual or visual arts practice and the right to live and work in the UK from August 2026 to June 2027. Applications close on Monday 10 August, with the shortlist announced on 12 August and the selected artist on 1 September.
