About this call
The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) in Washington, D.C., United States, awards one Audrey Flack Short-Term Fellowship each year for a one-month (thirty-day) residency for a scholar researching American art. The residency must take place between June 1, 2027 and May 31, 2028. The fellow receives a $5,000 stipend plus a travel allowance of $100 to $1,000, a Smithsonian badge and a study carrel in SAAM's Research and Scholars Center, one floor above the Archives of American Art and the American Art/Portrait Gallery Library, and can share research with other SAAM fellows and attend seminars. Housing is not provided. The fellowship is meant for researchers whose personal circumstances, such as financial constraints, employment conditions or care-giving responsibilities, preclude longer residencies; applicants submit a statement justifying a short-term fellowship and must identify a member of SAAM's research staff as primary advisor. Projects that need SAAM's collections and staff expertise are prioritized. The application opens on December 1 in the Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment System (SOLAA).
