François Daulte Research Scholarship 2026-2027
About this call
Musée Fabre in Montpellier has held the François Daulte archive since 2017. The archive of the art historian, author of the first catalogue raisonné of Frédéric Bazille, is accompanied by 76 autograph letters by Bazille, 8 letters from his family and 30 letters from artist friends including Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Edmond Maître. To open up this material, the museum runs an annual François Daulte scholarship of 10 000 € for research in history and art history. Priority themes are the life and work of Frédéric Bazille, Alfred Sisley and Auguste Renoir; the beginnings of Impressionism; Impressionism and the graphic arts; exhibiting and collecting Impressionism; the history of art criticism in the second half of the 19th century; and cultural and artistic life in Montpellier in the second half of the 19th century. A jury of seven, chaired by the museum director and including the museum's 19th century curator, a painting curator connected to the Musée d'Orsay period and a specialist academic, selects 4 to 5 projects. Selection is announced in January 2027, the scholarship is presented in May 2027, and the resulting work is due two years after the award.

- Open to French-speaking or English-speaking researchers in history and art history who are enrolled in a doctorate or hold a doctorate at the time of submission. The dossier is sent digitally by email to vanessa.FURDIN@montpellier.fr with the mention bourse « François Daulte » and must contain a four page project presentation in French or English (excluding bibliography and images) with a work schedule and a provisional budget, a CV listing publications, papers, conferences and teaching, a letter of intent, the thesis report, an optional letter of recommendation from a scholar, and the signed and dated regulations downloaded from the museum site. The scholarship must result in a digital or printed publication within the two years following the award, carrying the mention bourse « François Daulte » and the museum logo.
