About this call

The City of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, seeks an artist or artist-led team to create a permanent labyrinth-inspired sculpture with an accompanying screen for Paisley Parkette, part of the expanded Cooksville and Iggy Kaneff park system near Cooksville Creek. The artwork should reflect the natural and cultural identity of Cooksville Creek and offer a journey-based interactive experience inspired by labyrinth traditions of reflection, discovery, mystery and excitement. The lawn space is approximately 18m in diameter, and the accompanying screen must stay permeable and visible rather than a solid barrier. This is a two-stage process: up to three artists will be shortlisted from this Expression of Interest to develop a proposal (December 2026 to January 2027), and the City aims to install the artwork in 2028.

Who can apply

  • Open to applicants of any nationality
  • Medium: Sculpture / Installation
  • Entry fee: See official site
  • Open to professional artists and artist or artist-led teams; the City defines a professional artist as someone who earns all or a sizable portion of their livelihood from artistic work and is recognized by peers, and it also accepts informal training and community or peer recognition. Submit through the City's online portal: an expression of interest (written, 1000 words max, or a recorded video, MP4 or link, max 20 MB), CV, portfolio of up to 10 images (each with title, year, media, location, project budget, dimensions, collaborators or commissioning agencies), contact details for two references, a disclosure on use of artificial intelligence, and a screenshot proving completion of the anonymous submission survey. The curator information form includes a declaration that the applicant is 18 years of age or older. Applicants who cannot use the portal may send one PDF to public.art@mississauga.ca. The CAD 374,000 + HST budget covers all artist fees and expenses, including technical consultation, travel to the site and project meetings, materials, engineering, fabrication, installation and delivery, insurance and permit fees, maintenance plan documentation and attendance at the unveiling. The proposal fee is paid separately; there is no further compensation for costs of taking part in the selection. The commissioned artist is expected to use vertical elements that create a spatial experience and to meet safety and accessibility requirements, including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles.
