About this call

The Sacramento Office of Arts and Culture, through its Art in Public Places programme, is seeking an artist to create new work for the entrance of the newly renovated Martin Luther King Jr. Library. The envisioned proposal is three-dimensional sculptural artwork installed on one or two entrance walls, realised as sculptural relief panels or a series of constructed panels mounted directly on the brick walls leading to the front door. The artwork should speak to the theme of civil rights. Painted murals are not acceptable, and professional sculptors with site-specific design experience are particularly encouraged to apply. The total artist budget is $151,500, beginning with a $1,500 design fee for community and staff consultation and followed by a $150,000 artwork purchase agreement for final design, engineering, permitting and fabrication. This is a request for qualifications rather than a request for proposals, so applicants submit credentials and past work rather than a finished design.

Who can apply

  • International applicants
  • Medium: Sculpture / Installation
  • Free entry
  • All eligible applicants must be 18 years old or older and be experienced professional artists. Artists may apply individually or as a team. There is no geographic restriction, though preference is given to artists with a cultural, familial or historic connection to the Sacramento Valley region. Painted murals are not acceptable; the work must be three-dimensional sculptural artwork for the entrance walls. Submissions are made through the Sacramento Office of Arts and Culture Submittable portal and are free of charge.
