ANAT Synapse Residency Program 2027

About this call

ANAT Synapse pairs an artist with an Australian research organisation for a period of creative research at the intersection of art, science and technology. One residency is offered for 2027, undertaken over 16 weeks full time or the part-time equivalent between February and October 2027. The residency is largely self-guided and suits artists with a self-disciplined and focused creative working process; the artist liaises directly with the host researcher to set working times and dates, and the term may combine onsite and offsite periods including in-person and online meetings and studio-based research. Applications are joint and led by the artist, so the artist must identify a prospective host organisation and discuss the proposed research collaboration with them before applying. ANAT does not set annual themes and prefers to host artists and research partners from different artistic, scientific and technological disciplines each year.

• Eligible applicants are artists who are Australian citizens or permanent residents, based in Australia at the time of the residency, whose focus will be to creatively research an idea in collaboration with a research partner in the science or technology fields. The intended host organisation must be based in Australia and able to host for 16 weeks full time or the part-time equivalent. Ineligible are artist groups, since the artist fee covers one artist only, artists who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents, artists or hosts based outside Australia, artists who have not engaged with their intended host before applying, artists with clear predetermined outcomes in mind, and tertiary students including PhD candidates where the residency relates to their studies. The application requires a residency budget, and proposals involving First Nations knowledge systems, artists or communities must include letters of support from those people or communities.
