INHABIT Artist in Residence 2027, Open Call for Entries
About this call
INHABIT is the artist in residence programme of the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt am Main, which invites artists to spend four months making new work, or developing an existing project, inside a scientific research environment. The institute treats artistic thinking as a reflective practice in its own right, so the residency is built around real exchange with individual researchers and research groups rather than a studio stay next door to them. The 2027 open call fills two slots: INHABIT #16 runs April to July 2027 and INHABIT #17 runs September to December 2027. The institute is looking for artists from the performing arts and music who want interdisciplinary collaboration between artistic and scientific fields, who are willing to develop and share a project as an exhibition, performance, concert or other public format, and who are active in contemporary culture and respond to the institute with innovative and challenging ideas. Work made during the residency is presented in cooperation with local arts institutions and complemented by discursive formats. The jury decision is announced in November 2026.

- Upload the complete application by 23:59 CET on 1 September 2026 through the institute's application portal. It must include a current CV, an artist statement describing your practice, concepts and methods in no more than 500 words, a project proposal that outlines the scientific interest and sketches the connection to the institute and its research areas in no more than 500 words, and a portfolio of no more than 20 pages.
