Art Fair Beppu Spring 2027: Open Call for Exhibiting Artists
About this call
Art Fair Beppu launched in 2023 and has featured 179 artists and artist groups over three editions. Its format is unusual: artists are present on site and sell their work through direct conversation with visitors, rather than through a booth staffed by a gallery. From this edition the fair is reintroduced as Art Fair Beppu Spring, organized by the Mixed Bathing World Executive Committee with NPO BEPPU PROJECT as management office and support from a Fiscal Year 2026 grant from Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs. The 2027 edition runs Saturday January 30 to Monday February 1, 2027 across multiple venues in central Beppu, including vacant storefronts, and shifts to a co directorship spanning Japan and abroad. The fair says it is looking for emerging talents who create new and unseen value, and it plans to select only a few artists.

- Applicants must be 18 or older at the time of application and must currently be based in East Asia, Southeast Asia or South Asia, including Japan. All genres are welcome, including painting, sculpture, video, performance, craft and project based work. Applicants must be able to communicate in Japanese or English, must be present at the venue during the fair to explain their work and talk with visitors, and must offer exhibited works for sale with clear pricing. Artists handle installation, deinstallation, display setup, equipment, maintenance and packing of sold pieces themselves, and bear those costs.
