About this call

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design is the administrative home for this fellowship for early career Minnesota-based artists. Funded by a grant from the Jerome Foundation, the programme has run since 1981 and has advanced the careers of more than 200 visual artists. An independent jury of three arts professionals competitively awards four fellowships. The 2026/27 fellowship runs from December 1, 2026 to March 15, 2028. Funds may be used to purchase materials, cover the production costs of new artwork, and supplement living or travel costs; awards and professional development funds are subject to state and federal income tax guidelines. The programme is aimed at visual artists who can present their work in a gallery context, working in a variety of visual art media including traditional and new media. MCAD and the Jerome Foundation state that they welcome applications from artists representing diverse cultural perspectives. The 2025/26 cohort was selected from 81 Minnesota-based applicants.

  • Open to early career Minnesota-based visual artists who can present their work in a gallery context, in traditional or new media. Eligible applicants must be in the early stages of their careers and have not yet attained professional acknowledgment commensurate with the quality of their work. Applications are submitted through MCAD's Submittable account, which operates as the MCAD Gallery + McKnight and Jerome Fellowship Programs Application Manager. The application requires ten work samples, a resume, an artist statement, and a fellowship goals statement. MCAD advises reading the downloadable Application Guidelines first because parts of the process have changed and expanded, and offers one-on-one feedback appointments with fellowship staff before submission. The deadline is Friday, September 11 at noon Central Time.
