The Interior Art Prize 2026

The Interior Art Prize is an annual art competition administered by Weswal Gallery, an independent commercial gallery on Brisbane Street in Tamworth, New South Wales. Now in its third year, the prize asks artists to respond to the theme of 'Interiors', focusing on physical architectures, domestic sanctuaries and the way lived-in space is arranged, and it positions itself within the lineage of the interior scene in Australian art history. Still life is explicitly outside the brief: the gallery asks whether the work focuses on a small group of non-living objects or on a room and how space within it is arranged, and states that still life artworks will not be accepted. Both 2D and 3D submissions are welcome in any medium other than new media. Entries are assessed and shortlisted by a panel appointed by the gallery, finalists are announced by email and telephone, and the finalist works go on show at Weswal Gallery. Finalist artworks must be delivered to the gallery at the entrant's expense by 5pm on Friday 24 September 2026 and remain available until the exhibition closes on Saturday 7 November 2026. All entries must be available for sale, with a commission of 40 percent plus GST charged on sales.

- Open to Australian citizens or residents aged 18 or over on 2 August 2026 whose main place of residence is Australia; proof of age or residency may be required. One artwork per person, and the work must have been produced in the 12 months before entries close. 2D works must not exceed 80cm high by 80cm wide by 10cm deep including the frame, and must weigh no more than 5kg; 3D works must not exceed 80cm in any one direction including the base, and must weigh no more than 15kg. Diptychs, triptychs and works in a series count as one work within those limits. Any medium is allowed except new media: no video, photography, performance, installation, photo media or sound works, and no reproductions, paintings on glass, photo-reproductions, computer or Artificial Intelligence assisted works, or Giclee prints. Entry is digital only, with a non-refundable entry fee payable in full at entry; the fee amount is not published on the gallery's own site or in its Terms and Conditions. A 300dpi JPEG or JPG image between 1MB and 3MB, an artist biography and a statement about the work are required. Artworks by non-Aboriginal artists reflecting Aboriginal cultural themes and imagery will not be accepted unless created through an ethical partnership. All entries must be available for sale, must not be offered for sale on any other platform during the prize, and a 40 percent commission plus GST applies. Finalists cover transit insurance both ways and must deliver 2D works with D rings and hanging wire attached.
