About this call
The Protopian Prize is a fiction contest co-sponsored by Metagov and The Public AI Network. It invites previously unpublished short stories of 500 to 6,000 words across two categories: the Public AI Prize, imagining AI development, ownership, and policy built for public benefit, and the Democratic Futures Prize, imagining institutions and tools that expand shared control over collective futures. Each category winner receives $5,000. Winning stories will be published in an MIT Press anthology alongside established science fiction writers. The contest is free to enter and open to writers internationally. Submissions are accepted from May 1 through July 31, 2026.
